I think that
sometimes
God rises out of the water
like a big, shaggy dog,
and shakes himself,
so that anything that is
superfluous,
artificial,
unnecessary,
is flung out and away,
and everything that is
anchored down
and essential
for life and beauty
remains,
stuck firmly to his skin.
Then God moves on,
lighter,
and freed from irritation.
sometimes
God rises out of the water
like a big, shaggy dog,
and shakes himself,
so that anything that is
superfluous,
artificial,
unnecessary,
is flung out and away,
and everything that is
anchored down
and essential
for life and beauty
remains,
stuck firmly to his skin.
Then God moves on,
lighter,
and freed from irritation.
